Learning To Say No, Changing Your Direction, & All That Good Stuff

by Stepfanie B on July 1, 2010

There are 3 things that I look for when I am trying to figure out what kind of work and projects to take on:

  • Does this interest me? Is this something I will really enjoy doing?
  • Will this give me the right kind of publicity? How will this boost my platform for writing? How will this help me achieve my other goals and give me credibility in my life of work?
  • Will I make legitimate money from this? Is the money worth the time, is the time worth the money?

The reason I love entrepreneurial work is that it gives you the freedom to do the kind of work you love, acording to the most important things to you.

Lately, I feel I may have been biting off more than I can chew. I am the first person I know to say YES to a project, but with my family growing, and my needs changing, there may be a couple of things and projects in my life that I need to say NO to you and a couple I need to put my full concentratoin to.

Basically, I am planning on re-assessing my life and work schedule and if any of them don’t fit ALL 3 categories I am looking for, then they are getting a big fat BYE BYE.

Why? Because it is important to live the way you want, and I want to live the way I want. Simply said.

So I’m excited to let you know about new projects I am working on, and some I might be saying bye too.

  • I am currently creating a national association for entrepreneurial moms. One of the things I love doing is helping mothers start their own businesses to spend time with their families. This is a great way to be viewed as an expert in that topic and I love working with people. I already have 5 top expert mompreneurs partnered and ready to go. This is a GO GO GO.
  • Blogging: Stepfanie’s Time Out is my personal blog and will always be something I do, but I have also started My Money Reality, a finance blog, and have started blogging for Blogalicious. These are all GO’s!
  • The Lady Bloggers Society – I founded LBS back in February of 2010, as a way for women to conenct together. I wanted to use LBS as a platform to be able to talk more about blogging and writing. Now, I am not sure how much I want to talk about blogging versus talking about staying productive/working from home/and being an entrepreneur. This is something I will continually want to work with, but not sure what role I want to play, teaching vs managing. This is an UN-DECIDED.
  • Writing: I want to be able to write full time, writing e-books, a novel or two, and writing articles for magazines and newspapers. This is a FULLTIME GO!
  • Virtual Assisting: I’ve done virtual assisting in the past, and was on the way to make a full-time business out of it. Now, it does not fit in my schedule at all. A BIG NO.
  • Residential Cleaning Service: I started a residential cleaning service back when my TrulyBear was born, but know I am not sure whether I will continue managing it full-time, or hire a full new staff to take care of the whole thing, while I just manage the team itself. Looking at OPTIONS.
  • Life Coaching: I considered becoming a certified life coach to help mothers live the lifestyle they want with their children. I’ve decided that it doesn’t fit with the life I want to live. I don’t want to be busy talking and coaching clients, and take time away from my children. A BIG NO.

Whew!

I think it’s always a good idea to step back and re-assess your life and different projects and eliminate the unneccessary. Things that are taking up too much of your time and not getting the return you are really looking for, then strike it out.
